Vers has a lot of nerve making an iPod speaker dock that’s not white or black or plastic or that otherwise doesn’t resemble a member of the Apple family: the Vers Wood iPod Speaker Dock 2X101.

No, the debut product from Sprout Creation of Wayland, Mass., is a hand-finished, retro-inspired beauty, wrapped in elegant cherry wood that sells for $180.
The little Vers 2X101 music system hits all the right green notes, too, with wood from plantation sources, compliance with new international restrictions on hazardous materials in electronics, and recycled packaging. And it has none of those nasty little disposable twist ties wrapped around the power cord or cables.

Where most iPod speaker docks look like plastic playthings built for Nickelodeon’s demographics, the 2x is almost Rockwellian. With the wood cabinet and black-cloth grille, it could have been sired by that old bookshelf speaker in Grandpa’s den. (Ah, you can almost smell the Borkum Riff pipe tobacco.)
